Microsoft as07a41 had hitherto been solely involved in handling the software side of computers, and had never really meddled with the portfolio of its Windows OEMs.
However, with the challenges that the likes of Apple a1185 (and Google’s Nexus line) have brought along, the Redmond giant realized that integrating its hardware and software models could be the next big step for it as a company.
Naturally, OEMs um08a31 have no reason to be pleased, and there have been rumblings about their displeasure at being allegedly blindsided by MSFT in the entire saga. Acer’s CEO has now come out with a very public expression of disapproval in an interview with the Financial Times, and his words may be cause for Microsoft to worry, in case the Surface project doesn’t pan out the way it wants it to.
The Acer as07b41 CEO, JT Wang, had this to say to FT: “We have said think it over. Think twice. It will create a huge negative impact for the ecosystem and other brands may take a negative reaction. It is not something you are good at so please think twice. If Microsoft is going to hardware business, what should we do? Should we still rely on Microsoft, or should we find other alternatives?”
While Acer may not really have much of a presence outside of its Windows computers (its Acer as07b31 Iconia TabsAndroid tablets have had mediocre sales at best), if other OEMs like HP and Dell get the same ideas at any point, Microsoft may find its core Windows + Office market slipping away in no time.
